I know. [He glances at the food.] You're a lot more helpful than I ever actually say.

I know. This entire household would fall to pieces without me.

It probably would. [Which is to say, Dave isn't quite so sure in his own skills at the moment. He trusts Vriska a lot more than he lets on at this point. She was a pretty good housemate to have around. Someone who wasn't afraid to do what she should do, even if it meant killing.

[ Shrug. ] I am technically your dad, apparently, so it makes sense.

Now each your goddamn dinner, young man.

You know that shit makes even less sense than usual.

[But he does start eating. At some point, he stops though. Like he's been thinking the entire time, but he had to concentrate on what he was thinking now. There's a pained look in his eyes.]

[ Dirk's just sitting there. Watching. Like a creeper, which is kind of what he is tbh.

He waits for a few seconds after Dave stops. ]

Sup?

[It takes a moment for Dave to reply.]

This vague memory bullshit is getting really fucking annoying. [He doesn't know why he's still thinking about it either. The longer he thinks about it, the more it hurts.]

What, are you trying to remember where you were for the last few days?

I think I can put 'gone to hell' off my bucket list. Pretty cliche, but I can't imagine where else smells like burning flesh, flames, and torture. [The way he says it though...he's not entirely sure that's what he's even remembering. It seems like vague memories is going to haunt Dave for all eternity, apparently.]

That or someone is hella fuckin' unimaginative.

[Dirk should probably consider a topic change. Dave is slowly going into a dangerous territory that probably involves trying to figure out if he was being tortured and if any screaming was his or something.

Dave. Please. You don't need to remember this.]

[ He knows that look. That's the "Thinking way too hard about something and blocking everything else out" look. Dirk does that way too much himself; Dave doesn't need to also. ]

Hmm? [That could barely be considered recognition. Dave is still doing the thinking thing.]

You okay?

Yeah. Why do you ask? [No. No, he probably isn't okay. But when has Dave ever been purely honest about how he feels?]

I was just thinking. [He says it offhandedly. He still is.]

[ He watches closely.

This is awkward and these two are so bad at feelings. ]

What's your mental image of hell.

[This is probably a really weird question to ask suddenly.]

[ It is. Dirk stares down at his lap and thinks for a while before answering. ]

Impotence.

[rememberstime]

I meant imagery. How do you imagine what it would look like.

[There's a line of thinking to this. Dave just isn't saying what it is.]

I've never considered that.

[ He looks up at Dave. ]

Why are you asking me this?

[Dave kind of just...buries his face into his hands. The longer he thinks about it the more he feels sick about it. He's pretty resilient to these things, but he's trying too hard to remember and it's seriously starting to show.]

I don't know where they sent me. [The smell of mutilated flesh. The sounds of screaming. An intense feeling of just pain.]

[ Dirk doesn't answer. He sort of gets the implication of what Dave is saying.

He stands up, walks around the table, and with a moment's hesitation -- because Dave stabbed him oh god -- he sits down next to him and leans up against him. ]

You're back now.

[Dave saw that hesitation and damn if it didn't make him feel even worse about it. Because regardless of who was in control, it was still his body and his image that killed Dirk. He didn't respond, unsure if he was even allowed to start any contact with Dirk. If Dirk was okay with it, than that's fine, but he wasn't going to do anything unless the other showed that he was okay with it. He didn't want to make the other more uncomfortable around him.]

I know. But who's to say how long that will last. [Someone is feeling awfully pessimistic today.]
